At the edge of the world

Dichtung von Jeremy Adler Beauty upholds the sky, like the moon brimming with flowers beside a stream. For the truth still stands, and the star will rise, but friends walk back and forth. We grieve, as nothing less can satisfy the heart, than love, though the mind struggle for life. A garden waits beyond the stream. Hardly a breath, not even sighs can stir, until the lungs repay their grace. Look thruogh the gate. Too soon we do not even say farewell. Too soon we do not even part. Too soon a friend may once remember that we were. So, welcom the night, for that ist where we go. Death swung the bell I heard his ring, And the wind Tugged at the trees Behind the fence, I see, voices piled high like monuments, and the a wagging dog: has the jolly soul jumped up to greet his master? The wishful deed recedes before my gaze. Then let me pause, on the banks of time, and ponder instead the heavy end when the ferrryman has hauled his load across: is there an end? How could an end begin? Beginning cease? The waves lie still. No answers move. For this, the world's midnight is, where only fantasy endures. Fantasy, and the gods: nothing is more real; and nothing ist more real then pain. Death swung the bell I know his tune, And a voice Called out ... A promise melted in the fog, and the words appeared: I am the story of your love, your branches and your fruit, and the quick grass that peoples the earth; I walk with fabled nature, when the sun polishes the land, so listen to my tale: I've sung at many parties, and cursed in many halls, but the sound of liberty has the best tune of them all. Here's a toast of freedom! True freedom was my life! The devil take all comrades! Here's a toast to freedom and to life! Death's at the door, Let him walk in, For I am as strong As the trees. A shadow moved among the woods. The air is free, yet the hours have returned to pay their debt; must therefore guilt, and fear, and loss prevail? Perhaps the birds are stirring in their nest. You gave the word to glory, and joked when the angels came. How could mere parting dissipate your love? The changing night reserves pain, like a flower wich unfolds within, and waits till we go out: we are but hope of other life, when our dreams have gone to seed, and ceded power to the night. But enough is enough. The future steps ashore, and the tide of song washes the pebbles to dust. Death walked away, I followed him, To the gate Among the trees ... The dawn appears, the past will not be swept aside: I turn my eyes to the hills, where the springs leap forth and quickly fall. Just so there is a moment between going and return, that rises to the cloud, where the god hurls down his joy: here shall you see the houses of Elysium, and enter the new kingdom of the world. The twilight melts, like al loss put out to grace, and the forest glitters beside the wintry pasture. The road drops away from the river, when by an unknown light we stop, and turn, and know, that the earth, suspended from the sun, transforms the sky. Death broke his bell, I heard him go, And the wind rustled the trees. A vision speaks more sharply than an newborn scream, to guide a memeory, where truth belongs: the wise, the heroes gather, to satisfy our hope, and raise their injured friend. Their knowledge they wirhhold, and yet his deed survives. Meanwhile, perhaps, our ignorance protects: for skin and eyes, mere sense, could never grasp the simpler truth, like a cup that cracks with heat; but tomorrow's young will stumble on shards, then pick them up, to reconstruct the past: fabled beauty will rrise again, and with here brush, a hope, a dream, will paint her views across another day. But we, surviving more sadly, will listen to the fates, who spin their yarn at the edge of the world. I heard his ring and the wind tugged at the trees. - Is there an end? How could an end begin? Beginning cease? Death swung the bell, i know his tune. Death's at the door, let him walk in, for I am as strong as the trees. Death walked away, I followed him to the gate among the trees. Death broke his bell, I heard him go and the wind rustled the trees. Endend verflicht die Komposition den Schluß des Gedichtes mit einer unvollständigen Wiederholung der vorletzten Reimstrophe: But we, surviving more sadly, will listen to the fates - death walked away - who spin their yarn - I followed him - at the edge - to the gate - of the world.
